The term Guerilla marketing derived its name from guerilla warfare. In Guerilla warfare, one has to hide and camouflage and then have to attack an enemy with the sudden action which means it contains an element of surprise. The same surprise marketing tactic is used by the marketer to grab the attention of the mass audience.

This term is coined by Jay Levinson in 1980s. He is a renowned writer and wrote many books on guerilla marketing. Some of his best works are guerilla social media marketing, guerilla remix marketing, guerilla marketing weapon.
